Bases and installation

Whether your greenhouse or garden building project is a small budget structure or an imposing victorian glasshouse, the base it is erected on is crucially important. Bases need to be built accurately, provide adequate anchorage and prevent the structure from being subjected to movement.

We have the experience and expertise needed to ensure that the bases we construct are built to the highest standard, using the most suitable materials, and will stand the test of time. We guarantee that our bases are built to the greenhouse manufacturers specification thereby ensuring your greenhouse fits as designed.

Brick base- glass to ground structures

Usually two courses of bricks to the dimensions of the greenhouse, laid onto a perimeter concrete foundation.

  • Engineering bricks are used with the top course the solid type to ensure good fixing of the structure.

  • Greenhouse cills usually overhang the brickwork to assist shedding of water.

  • Various options for the inside, most commonly a natural stone path will be laid with options for earth and gravel.

  • Good drainage for water run off and a source of humidity for optimum growing environment.

Brick bases- dwarf wall

Similar construction and features to bases for glass to ground greenhouses but with higher walls, often for an authentic Victorian look. Features in addition to those above:

  • Can be single skin or double skin depending on greenhouse requirements and customer preference.

  • Facing bricks will be frost resistant, with specification to ensure long term durability.

  • Raised beds within the greenhouse can be easily built.

There are endless possibilities with the internal finish of a greenhouse base, and we work closely with our clients to ensure that the finished base is suitable for their purpose. Most commonly a central pathway will be provided leaving growing beds to the side, or gravel underneath staging for example to allow for drainage and water evaporation. Raised beds can be incorporated, or plunge beds for alpines, internal water tanks (above or below ground), vine entry points, venting systems (to attached coldframes for example), drainage systems and much more!

Paved and concrete bases

Whilst many growing requirements benefit from having soil or gravel inside a greenhouse, where this is not practical of the client would prefer a solid base a paved or concrete base can be provided.

Care needs to be taken to allow water drainage, and on sloping sites it is usually necessary to incorporate a retaining wall to take account of changes in levels.

Hardcore will be compacted over the required area to provide a suitable sub base, and the slabs bedded onto 60-80mm of cement bound bedding material to ensure the stability essential for a greenhouse.
